Attention Deficit… Wait, what?

Sometimes I wish I had a clone –or two- so I can do all the things I want to do. I know, I know, it wouldn’t be the same as doing them myself but it would be great to see the results. Most of the time I have so many projects and ideas that are bursting in my head that I could just scream. And also so many books I want to read and the ones I want to write, and the crafts I want to jump into, painting, crocheting, tie-dying t-shirts… I could go on and on but I won’t.

What I want to talk about this time is about accepting when you are someone all over the place. I have always been like this and if you could hear the thoughts in my head you would be surprised how I jump from one thing to the next. People that know me have experienced the fun of starting a conversation in person at breakfast and finishing on texts in the afternoon. I would just make the connection with: “as we were saying this morning”, like yeah, we started talking about this at 8.30 am and at 4 pm we will continue the conversation. Some people really hate it! My partner, fortunately, is just like me, and we keep doing this as if we were normal people and all.

For most of my life, I thought being this way was a problem. But I’ve learned and accepted that this is the way I am. Once you do this, you can actually enjoy it and get a lot done. Of course, the main problem is not finishing all the things you start. But that’s the part that you learn: you finish your shit! What I love about the freedom of doing many things at the same time is that it keeps me interested and wanting to do more. I know these days people –doctors and serious adults- like to call this ADD or ADHD. It sounds so clinical! Give me a break, it is only disruptive when the establishment –school, certain jobs, other boring and outdated institutions- say you can’t comply with what is expected. But would you comply with the standard of what is expected, when you are not standard?

The sooner you can value the way you are and make it work for you, the happier you’ll be and, believe me, you’ll thrive. Let’s open our minds and hearts and once and for all, let’s stop labeling what we don’t understand so we can move on to the fun part: discovering that we are all different and we can learn from each other and with each other.
